Time to Get Your 2016 Astrological Calendar!

Category: Staff Picks
Author: heartbodyandsoul

I’m a lazy amateur asAstrological Calendar2trologist.  (Or is it astrologer?)   I find the topic fascinating and invariably on point.  Love to work with those more knowledgeable than me who can connect the dots and create the pictures that are oh-so-familiar and at the same time oddly eye-opening.  (“Of COURSE that’s me.  That’s EXACTLY me.  Why didn’t I SEE that??”)  I buy astrology books and skim them, flipping to the parts that match my chart and nodding sagely as I once again see myself laid out there in New Times Roman font and squiggly astrological symbols.

But then there’s the whole putting-all-that-knowledge-to-use part.  I envy those able to recognize and point out the impact of sextiles and squares and Jupiterian transits on my chart … but not enough to put in the work to get there myself.  Just a fact.  I’m sure the reason for it is buried in my natal chart somewhere if I knew where to look.  I don’t.

But I HAVE found a wonderful resource that I can highly recommend:  Llewellyn’s Daily Planetary Guide.  For those of you who do understand Grand Trines and the impact of Plutonian retrogrades … you can find all that stuff in here, too.  You who want the data to figure out the puzzle on your own will find what you need here.   But for the rest of us, this guide ALSO has  the Cliff Notes version:  a weekly ‘highlights’ reel, with weekly summaries of the planetary energies at play, signposts to opportunity periods and warnings on when to tread lightly because tempers are likely to be on trigger point all round. Picking a wedding date?  Looking at when to sign a contract, take the plunge on that new project, plan a trip?  You can find out what the astrological weather looks like even if you do always confuse the symbols for Virgo and Scorpio.  (Because really — why would they both look like ‘M’s’ anyway??)

And hey — congrats to us all for having survived the seven Uranus-Pluto squares that rocked the world from 2012-2015!  Whatever that is.

Classes & Workshops coming up in January…!

Category: Blog, New News
Author: heartbodyandsoul

In the last several weeks, I’ve had three different conversations with people in search of community.  Ours can be an isolating society.  Finding avenues to meet new friends can be tough to find, especially if you’re past the bar-hopping stage of life or are an introvert at heart.

Gotta say — one of the most rewarding parts of opening Heart, Body, & Soul has been the number of people who have found community here.  The broad range of discussion groups, book clubs, classes, & workshops available here is a perfect opportunity not only to learn more about a topic of interest, but to find others of like interests — to connect, commune, and find your tribe.

So if getting happy and healthy are among  your New Year’s Resolutions  … (and really, isn’t that what ALL of our New Year’s Resolutions are really about??) …  read on.  After all, at just three months open, we are ALL new here, so you’ll fit right in!  Find what interests you and come join us.  Options abound ….

We woke this week  to news of yet another mass shooting — this time at the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood. Instant and palpable outrage.  Quickly followed by a feeling of futility and helplessness in the face of such senseless hate and destruction.  Whether it’s religious extremism abroad or homegrown hatred, what can we — what can any of us — possibly do to stem the tide of this craziness??

Whether you call it prayer or the power of intention, the fact is that thoughts are powerful vibrations. What we think about, focus on, obsess over — digs in and deepens its presence in our lives, for good or for ill.  So, if we are marinating ourselves and our society in the energy of our thoughts …  perhaps it would behoove us to give some thought to what exactly IS our marinade of choice?

Hmm.  Flip on any TV, radio, or podcast and what will you hear?  A host of pundits, political candidates, and talk show hosts, on all sides of the political spectrum, filling our ears and airwaves with finger-pointing, fear, anger, judgment and  ideas of ‘us vs them’ — if not outright hate.  Think about that. If thoughts are strong enough vibrations to literally change the shape of water crystals and the form of light — as some scientists now propound — what does that daily barrage do to the world and societies in which we live?  And more importantly, what can we do to counter it?  ‘Cause, let’s face it — most of us are not Gandhi, Mother Teresa, or Martin Luther King, Jr.  We are not likely to lead mass movements that change the course of history.

Or are we?

We seldom give much thought to the impact of a single word, a hug, a listening ear free of judgment — though all of us have been changed by those very things in our own life … or by the lack of them.    Truth is, we may wield more power than we know.  After all, the ripples that spread all the way across a wide lake begin with a small, single splash.

So here’s a thought.  How about we start a counter action, inundating the world with thoughts of peaceful coexistence–where problems engender a search for solutions instead of somebody to blame and differences of opinion lead to thoughtful discussion, rather than senseless death?   We’re not talking about some grand gesture — though if you’re called to that, more power to you.  The rest of us can start small and at home. Here are just a few ideas:

  • That co-worker or waiter who delivers less than great service?  What if we replaced the usual bitching to our friends and family about the sucky service with a blessing that his day (and life) gets better so he can be fully present to those around him?   …. [A-hem.  Gotta admit, that one hits a little close to home. Wince.]
  • Or the next time someone espouses a political position or supports a candidate you think is nuts? Maybe try a ‘tell me more about why you feel that way.’  Or ‘what is it that you like about him/her/ that?’  instead of jumping straight to our more typical  ‘you’re clearly an idiot’ default response.

Sound a little too PollyAnna?  (Okay, I just gotta ask — who IS PollyAnna anyway and how did she get this bad rap of being such a clueless sap??  Inquiring minds want to know.)   Anyway, here’s the thing:

A number of years ago, I ran into an acquaintance who’d been fired in a restructuring.  When I learned what had happened, I kept trying to offer support just as many of us do in that situation — by means of ‘Those !#&*@$ bastards!  What could they possibly have been thinking??‘  But instead of joining in the bash-fest, he stopped me, saying that while he’d enjoyed the work, there was this whole other thing he’d always been interested in and now he was getting the chance to explore that and how cool was that? And, ok — I admit it.  I thought he was being completely PollyAnna-ish (with apologies to P.A., whereever she may be) about the whole thing.    And yet — a decade later, I still remember that conversation.  And every time I hear of someone being forced into a job change they hadn’t sought, I wonder if maybe things will turn out for them like they did for Dan — bringing them home to themselves in a way they never would have experienced if the Universe hadn’t taken a hand and dumped them out of their comfort zone.   One short conversation, a decade ago that I’m sure he’s never given a second thought to … and yet it still impacts my thoughts today.

Words are indeed powerful.  So is taking the time to listen to one another.  A lot harder and more time-consuming than judging, condemning, bitching.  (Talk about moving out of our comfort zones!)  But the stakes are high here, folks. We have a world to turn around.

Maybe it’s time we all got started.

Black Friday & Silver Saturday

Category: New News
Author: heartbodyandsoul

Need to buy holiday gifts, but wanta avoid the crazy??  Yeah.  Us, too.  So we are offering an alternative to Black Friday insanity.  Instead of cutting your Thanksgiving dinner short to dash to the mall or rousting yourself at dawn to battle the lines that reach round the block, how about a leisurely visit to Heart, Body, & Soul’s

“Escape the Crazy” Black Friday Shopping Alternative?

You can still buy great gifts for all the folks on your list.  There will be plenty of special gift package options to choose from — in addition to the usual ‘not-so-usual’ gifts you can always find at Heart, Body, & Soul.  BUT you can also R-E-L-A-X:

  • Enjoy up to 15 minutes of Chair Massage from one of our resident Massage Therapists, Barbara King, for just $1 / minute anytime between 3 and 6 pm.
  • Take a shopping time-out with a free Wind-down Yoga class (offered by one of HBS’s yoga instructors, Jill Williams, at both 11 am and 5 pm.  Choose the one that fits your schedule.  Or enjoy both!)
  • Or just have a seat, rest your feet, have a cup of coffee, or sip some hot tea or mulled cider,  while perhaps perusing a book or two.  After all, books make great gifts … for yourself as well as for those others on your list.    (Hey, you can’t forget about YOU!!)  But if you have some non-bibliophiles on your list … never fear.  We’ve got you covered. There’s plenty more to choose from.

AND for the jewelry-lovers out there — or the lovers of jewelry-lovers…

Silver Saturday is the very next day.   The Saturday after Thanksgiving, all sterling silver items in the shop:  rings, earrings, pendants, chains, necklaces — everything over $25 that has sterling silver in it or on it somewhere — will be 15% off.

So avoid the crazy.  Treat your Heart, Body, & Soul to a different way of doing things this year.

Slow down.

Savor the season.

What have you got to lose … but the crazy?

See ya Friday.  Or Saturday.  Or both.  🙂

DSC_0593One of the coolest things about opening Heart, Body, & Soul has been the diversity of people coming in the door.  Young and old and in-between.  Students and college professors, skilled laborers and those struggling to find employment.   Nurses, doctors, and lawyers.  Car washers and mechanics.  Artists and musicians, scientists and ministers. Christian, Pagan, Buddhist, Muslim, and none of the above. Energy workers and healers of long experience; and those brand new to even the idea that we live and breathe and move within an energetic body as well as a physical one — and feel better and live better when we learn to take care of both.  People who are passionate about oils and herbs and crystals and people who haven’t a glance to spare at that stuff, but happily burrow into a stack of books and emerge only to refill their cup of tea.  Folks who are open to trying it all and folks who really prefer not to go there.

Labels and appearances inevitably deceive. We’ve learned to stop guessing at what each new soul walking through the door may be seeking.  Instead, we just enjoy the daily reminders of the rich diversity of life and energy, people and paths — and the stunning  symphony that results when each of us is simply true to our own authentic self.  (A lifetime journey that.  Much easier to say than to do, but so VERY worth it.)

Want to know what we’re thankful for today?  The music of the crossroads that is Heart, Body, & Soul.  Every one of you is part of that song — and together?  Friends, you rock the house.  Blessed Be!

‘Tis the Se12065888_897701600285460_7483592963415124934_nason of Gratitude.  (Though can I just point out how sad is it that Gratitude has a season?!?  But that’s a whole different rant which I’ll spare you all for the time being.  You’re welcome.)  On the Gratitude side, we can’t help but be inspired by this gorgeous piece of art — (which IS currently available at HBS; you can see it pouring its loveliness out all over our Studio the next time you stop by) — by the cr-azy fun and talented mixed media collage artist, Kelly Verstraete.

“Begin each day with a grateful heart.”  Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we actually DID that?  Not just one month out of the year, but every month.  Every day.  Every moment.  Not lip service but the real thing.  Yeah.  It could be big.

So how about we nudge each other toward that just a tad?  We’ll post the daily miracles of goodness and blessings that abound in our lives — too often unnoticed — on our Facebook page. You add yours.

And together, we’ll pour a whole lot of luscious Gratitude Energy out into the world.  (‘Cause let’s face it,  it’s hard to be pissy when you’re feeling grateful. And can’t we all do with fewer pissy people around us??)  C’mon — it’s not like we don’t all have reasons to feel it. So jump in on our Facebook page and share just one of the many daily miracles in your life with us each day.  Let’s inspire one another!!

And eat cake.

Because … cake.

Introducing a whole new kind of not-quite-devotional candles:  Everyday Icons!  Intricately decorated glass jar pillar candles, penned with prayers … to Our Lady of Abundant Caffeine (YES!!), Our Lady of the Bowling League, and Our Lady of Perpetual Youth … or Housekeeping.

Here you will find a candle with the Prayer for Unbridled Fun:

I surrender to the power of your laughter and beseech you to grace my life with lots of friends willing to dress up in silly hats and feather boas and make fools of themselves in public.  Grant me the freedom not to care what others think, even if they point and stare.  Bestow upon me a family who encourages me in my revelry and occasionally cleans the house while I’m away.   And please, I beg of you, shower me with carefree fun for as long as I walk, sashay, boogie, or strut across this earth.  Amen.

There’s a candle for Protection From the Boss From Hell and Dysfunctional Family Relief.  A Procrastinator’s Prayer and one for Positive Cash Flow.  Protection From Bad Hair Days, Home Renovation Relief, and one for IMMEDIATE Alien Abduction.  It could take you days to check them all out, there are so many fun choices.  There’s even one to Our Lady of Triumphant Drag Queens.

The perfect choice,  whether you just need something to make you smile in the midst of chaos or are looking for that unique and ideal gift … keeping in mind that discretion is the better part of valor and HBS is not responsible for what may happen if you decide to give the Dysfunctional Mother candle to your mother.
