Herb Talk: HBS Tea #1

Category: Blog, New News, Staff Picks
Author: heartbodyandsoul

Emelie by Emelie Thibodeaux

Welcome to HERB TALK, a monthly column highlighting the teas we carry and each herb in them, as well as our single healers.  This first column will focus on one of HBS’s signature teas, HBS #1.  For those of you who haven’t made it to the shop yet to see for yourselves, Heart Body and Soul has quite a collection of teas and herbs.  Most of these teas boast healing actions that address specific issues, while a few of them are tasty (what I call) “sippin’ teas” (and some serve both purposes).  Whatever the actions, they are all good!  And you say you’re not a tea drinker?  Well, I didn’t think I was either, except for the occasional glass of Southern sweet iced tea!  But I surprised myself!

HBS #1 grew from the need of a young employee for a soothing, calming tea that would not only help mood and headaches but that was also fragrant and tasted good.  This being the very first tea I ever created (mixed on the spur of the moment!), I was definitely guided by Spirit to the 4 herbs that are in this calming blend (“Put this and this.  Oh, and this, and this one!”):  Chamomile flowers, Lavender flowers, Lemonbalm leaf and Spearmint leaf.  The information in this article just skims the surface of all the helpful services these herbs provide! So, read on for these basics.

German Chamomile
I used to grow Chamomile in my herb garden and it was a beautiful plant, covered when blooming with tiny daisy-like flowers (it is usually the flowers that are used, though the leaves may be, too).  HBS #1 has German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) as its main ingredient.  There are several related species of this herb but we carry German in the shop.
When I think of Chamomile, I think “calming”.  It may be used for anxiety, insomnia, indigestion, sore throat (gargle), the inflammation of gingivitis (mouth rinse), and inflamed, irritated eyes (eyewash), among others.  It speeds the healing of wounds when applied externally and offers support for the nervous system.  Adding chamomile tea to bath water creates a soothing bath.  Infused into a massage oil, it is good for relieving stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.  It supports digestion by stimulating peristalsis and relaxing the stomach.
Contraindications:  Some people are allergic to Chamomile, so if itchy eyes, a runny nose or scratchy throat develop when using it, discontinue its use.
Lavender
Lavender (Lavendula officinalis, among other species) is a fragrant herb whose flowers may be found in many tea and essential oil blends, salves, tinctures, massage oils, perfumes and bath products.  Like Chamomile, Lavender is useful with digestive issues, relaxing any nervous tension that may be causing digestive spasms or colic.  For headaches, including migraines, try blending with Feverfew, or Lemon balm and Scullcap.  Toss a muslin tea bag full of Lavender buds into your bath for a relaxing, tension-easing, end-of-day experience.  Rosemary Gladstar (my herbal mentor/teacher),* recommends massaging a few drops of essential oil of Lavender onto the nape of the neck, temples, and/or feet and relaxing on the couch with a Lavender-filled eye pillow over the eyes for “calming relief” of headaches or stress/nervous tension.  And isn’t it handy that we carry a roll-on Lavender oil that can easily be rolled onto the body (temples, wrists, soles of the feet, and nape of neck)!
Lavender has powerful antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiseptic actions.  It is effective when used for strep, staph, colds and flu.  Use the essential oil for nail fungus or ringworm, with or without tea tree oil.  Use the oil on scrapes, wounds, burns and bug bites (bees, mosquitoes).  As a tea or tincture, blend with St. John’s Wort and Milky Oats for easing grief and depression.  Mix with Passionflower and Scullcap (in a tea or tincture) for insomnia or restless sleep.  (When buying Lavender, it is best to use the buds, as the medicinal properties are not as strong in opened flowers and won’t last as long.)  Rosemary says of Lavender:  “A potent healing plant, it is a crone among herbs — wise, ancient, and powerful.”
Contraindications:  Though highly recommended for topical use with pregnant women (rubbing the oil on the lower back and feet during labor, for example, may strengthen contractions), Rosemary recommends against “using it internally in large amounts,” and, as always, a pregnant woman should check with her doctor first.  More information is available at livestrong.com/article/449143-lavender-tea-pregnancy.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint family.  The leaves and flowers are both usable.  An invitation for bees and butterflies to visit your garden, it can become quite prolific.  Mine started its life in my garden in the front beds and eventually hopped over into our back yard!  We didn’t mind, though; it was beautiful and smelled so good when we rubbed our hands over it.
Melissa is a nerve tonic, a calming relaxant.  It is beneficial not only for the nervous system but the digestive system as well.  It is a strong antiviral, used to treat herpes and shingles.  It helps relieve general exhaustion.  With children it may be used to treat ADD and ADHD, as well as recurring nightmares. As a tea, use it to flavor less tasty herbs. It may be eaten in salads and blended into fruit drinks.  It also makes a tasty tincture.
Contraindications:  Lemon balm is a “thyroid inhibitor”, according to Rosemary, so it is recommended that those with hypothyroidism or low thyroid activity, use only under the guidance of an herb-knowledgeable health-care practitioner.
Spearmint
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is, according to Rosemary, “the mother of all mints.”  It is primarily the leaves of Spearmint that are used and this herb is “cool, refreshing, uplifting”, being sweeter and milder than peppermint.
Spearmint tends to be better for children.  Blended with Lemon balm it works well for ADD, ADHD and anxiety.  It also works well as a fever-reducer in children, blended with Catnip and Elder flowers.  It is a mild digestive if taken before and/or after dinner.  A mild stimulant with relaxing properties too, it blends well in mixtures for the nervous system, strengthening, calming and gently energizing at the same time.  A simple way to enjoy it (in the summertime, especially)? Iced, with a pinch of stevia.
Contraindications: None! Spearmint is generally considered as safe for all.All of these beneficial actions (and more!) come along with the pleasing flavors in our tasty blend of HBS #1.   If you haven’t tried it yet, think about it!  Try it hot (or iced, with a touch of stevia or honey, for these long hot summer days), just to enjoy the mix of flavors, or for calming a stress headache or relaxing at the end of a long day.  Delicious, calming and uplifting all at the same time:  HBS #1!

ACK! Already behind …!! (also known as “It’s the middle of JULY already??”)

Category: Blog, New News
Author: heartbodyandsoul

SO … turns out it IS the middle of July and we missed the post at the first of the month to let you know what to watch for this month!  Hopefully, you are also keeping track of the fun stuff going on here by subscribing to our FB Events feed or to our Meet-ups.com site or by stopping in and picking up a paper calendar — and hence didn’t miss TOO much.  But just to make sure everyone knows what’s coming up these last two weeks of July, here we are to bring you up to date.  Late, but better late than never!

First, is a last minute addition to our calendar.  Grant McPeetie, as some of you may know, is in the midst of an ongoing series of Tarot Workshops.  Last Sunday, he covered two of the four suits of ‘small’ cards or ‘pips’ and we’ve added a Part II workshop to complete the other two this coming Sunday, July 17 from 1:30-3:30.  If you missed Part I of this “Tarot 102” workshop and want to catch up, go ahead and come this Sunday and let us know you missed Part I.  Grant has indicated a willingness to re-do the Part I portion between now and Tarot 103 coming up next month so everyone can get caught up.  Cost is $15 per class — and you’ll want to bring your Tarot with you!

And then, we’re also starting a whole new series with Victoria Day this month:  Wholly Movement — an incredible opportunity to identify and work with your own body’s resources and untapped capacities of creativity, cognition, sensation, intuition, spirit, emotion, action, function, and expression (whew!) … in a safe and fun environment.  (If you know Victoria at all, you know everything she does will be fun!)  This class isn’t just for jocks or yogis who can bend themselves into pretzels (though both groups would undoubtedly get a lot out of it).  It is for ALL of us, designed to be accessible and enjoyable for the whole range of movement abilities.  Zero experience or expertise is required.  You just need a body and a desire to get more in touch with all its wonderfulness.  This series will meet on the 3rd Wed of each month from July through November.  Cost is $20 per class ($100 if paid monthly) or $80 if paid in full at the first class.  Or you can get the really GOOD discount and get another 10% off by paying in full before the first class on July 20.

Want to explore a new kind of healing modality?  This month you can both learn about and experience Theta Healing with Karen Fox.  She’ll be doing individual Theta Healing sessions Fri & Sat, July 22-23 (30 minutes for $40 or 60 minutes for $75) and also leading a free Coffee & Conversation about the process on Sat, July 23.  Cause really, now … who of us can’t use some good healing juju now and again?!? And that same day, Emelie Thibodeaux, will be offering her Reiki I training again.

Sun, July 24, you can learn more about what’s going on in your dreamy subconscious self with Susan Franck’s Intro to Dream Work workshop (2-4) for just $15.  (You may have heard Susan talk about a bit about this at a couple of our Coffee & Conversations and if you did, you know this is going to be a GOOD workshop!)

Tricia Dietrich will be back with another hands-on Art-as-a-Spiritual-Practice workshop Sat, July 30 when she’ll have the group Making Prayer Flags.  Cost is $40 and registration is requested so Tricia will know what she needs to bring in the materials arena.  Give us a call at 573-777-6771 to get on the list.

And almost last but not least in the special events this month is the Crystal Grid & Pyramid Experience on Sunday, July 31.  This is your chance to experience for yourself what all the buzz is about when folks talk about crystals and pyramids.  We will have a number of crystal grids laid out on the floor of Studio around yoga mats, so you can lay down inside them and soak up the energy they provide.  Same with the crystal-gridded copper pyramids, big enough for you to sit in.  We can only take in between 6 and 8 people — every hour on the hour — and then those will rotate through each grid & pyramid, getting the chance to experience the different energies of each.  First group goes in at 1 pm, last group goes in at 5 pm.  Cost is $10.  Walk-in’s welcome if space is available — but if you want to reserve a particular time slot, give us a call at 573-777-6771.

LAST in the special events category is the Lammas Ritual Celebration, Sunday evening, July 31, faciliated by Grant & Ambiaka.  These celebrations of the turning of the Wheel of the Year are open to all, regardless of faith tradition, and free of charge.  Lammas, sometiems called Lughnasadh, celebrates the harvesting of the grain that will provide warm & yummy bread to sustain us through the cold winter months.  Who doesn’t want to celebrate THAT??

Of course we also have our ongoing good stuff as well:

The Divine Feminine Series, facilitated by Cat & Nancy, on the last Wed of the month (July 27, 6:30-8)
Tarot Readings w/ Grant, Sat July 16 (10-5) and Rexanna on Tues, July 19 (4-8);
Discussion Groups — the Tao Discussion Group (Sun July 17, 1-3), followed by the Science & Metaphysics Discussion Group  (Sun, July 17, 2-4).
Astrological Readings w/ Kacy on the 4th Tues of the month (call to reserve a slot and give us your BD info so she can prepare your chart).
Psychic Readings & Past Life Regressions w/ Paula every Wed evening
Yoga Therapy w/ Crystal on Thurs, July 21 (6:30-8)
Yoga Nidra w/ Adrian on Thurs, July 28 (7-8)

And of course our free Coffee & Conversation every Sat morning at 10:30.  We provide the coffee & the topic.  You provide the conversaton and company!  Hope to get the August news up a little sooner, but in the meantime … I do believe there are a FEW things here to hold you all over.  🙂

Happy July!!!

2016 Best of Columbia Award!! (And upcoming June events)

Category: Blog, New News
Author: heartbodyandsoul

So THAT happened!!  As any of you who know us would expect, the news of our selection for one of InsideColumbia’s Best Business Awards was met with a number of happy dances round the premises.  After all, we’ve only been OPEN seven months so even getting nominated for such an award, much less receiving it, was a wonderful surprise!

Over and over and over again, we are reminded of just how incredibly supported this endeavor continues to be. Doors naturally open, good things abound, the right person walks in the door at just the right time to give us exactly what we’re seeking, the community continues to grow and blossom beyond even our wildest imaginings (and we have some pretty wild imaginations!). We often say that this place was simply SUPPOSED to happen and we were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to serve as its midwives.  It is so very true.

Just yesterday we had 25 people show up to share coffee and participate in a Saturday morning conversation on Dreams, with dream therapist Susan Franck. It was a great discussion!  Just as fun were all the connections and conversations that continued around the shop after it was over — a couple of people here, a group of 3-4 over there.   Over and over we heard from people that they came here seeking ‘x’ and just ‘happened’ to strike up a conversation with the very person who provides ‘x’. It is our delight to just stand back and watch those connections happen again and again and again.

So this is a ‘thanks a bunch’ to all of you — for all the many parts you play in making this community exactly what it is and helping it grow and bloom even more. You ROCK. Truly. (OH, and check out the great events coming up for June — read on!!)

JUNE EVENTS AT HEART, BODY, & SOUL

We have packed as much as we possibly could into that first weekend of June! The Coffee & Conversation topic Saturday morning, June 4 will be “Art as a Spiritual Practice” w/ Tricia Dietrich — who will be leading a workshop called “Cosmic Smash-Booking” later in the month (June 18) to explore that very topic in a very hands-on way. Rexanna will be here to read Tarot and Emelie is holding an already sold-out Reiki II class.

Sunday, June 5, Erin Angst Baker will be doing a reprise of her popular workshop on Energy Clearing & House Cleansing (not to be confused with House CLEANING, though we’re certainly open to anyone wanting some hands-on practice in that topic as well.) She’ll be followed by Connie Jacoby of Wise Women Botanicals offering a workshop on Blending Essential Oils, and we wrap the day up with a Musicians’ Night Out! All area musicians looking for a chance to dust off their instruments and jam with other talented souls are invited to join us at 6 pm — and those who just want to come listen and enjoy their gifts along with us are welcome as well. Should be a super-fun evening for all!

The second weekend of June, Amy Dove will be leading the Coffee & Conversation on the topic of Personal Altars — another topic that will be followed up later in the month with a related workshop, this one taught by Clare Connor on Making Mini-Altars (June 21) and Grant McPeetie will be setting up a giant crystal grid in the Studio for folks to just come and enjoy whenever they have time. (And how cool is THAT? We’re super-stoked to get to be a part of The Big Grid Project this way!)

Third weekend of June, we have Grant back reading Tarot, Raven Bren leading a Coffee & Conversation on The Desire Mapa method for getting in touch with our true desires, Tricia’s Cosmic Smash-Booking Art Journal Workshop, and a reprise of Raven Bren’s very popular Intro to Manifestation Class. (A more in-depth six week series will follow in July for those wanting to delve deeper.) We also have the Science & Metaphysics Discussion Group AND an open Summer Solstice Ritual (Sat, June 18 – 6 pm) for all who want to revel in the power of the Sun at its zenith! Heads up though, the Tao Discussion Group will NOT be meeting this month. Watch for its return in July.

We also have Paula offering Psychic Readings and Past Life Regressions every Wed evening, Kacy offering Astrological Readings the 4th Tues of the month, a Group Healing Attunement and Yoga Nidra with Adrian Campbell, Yoga Therapy with Crystal DeShazo, Tai Chi Classes with Mary Cruise, a Hearthfires Meet-up (2nd Tues), and a new personal development series called The Daring Way based on the work of Brene Brown, taught by Emily Arth. We have the Women’s Intentional New Moon Drumming Circle w/ Baraka (June 17) and our first every CHILDREN’S Drumming Circle (June 24), another workshop in the ongoing Divine Feminine Series and a final Coffee & Conversation on the 25th on Lessons from Native American Spirituality, faciliated by Paula Curry.

To get all the details re dates, times, costs, & registration for any of these, you can check out our Classes & Events page on the website:  https://www.heartbodyandsoul.org/classes-events/  (Scroll down to the calendar and click on the event you want to know more about to open a page with all the details). Or you can subscribe to our Events feed on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/heartbodyandsoulcenter/events  or join our Meet-Ups group  http://www.meetup.com/Heart-Body-Soul.   Or just stop by the shop and pick up a printed calendar with all the info in one neat place. [Any day but Sunday, June 26 that is. We will be closed to host a private event that day (a wedding reception for one of our favorite people!!), but we’ll be on our regular schedule other than that.]

Happy Summer, all!!

tulip_flower_violet_231297If you have Spring Fever and are looking for something to get you off the couch and out of the house — here are just a few little suggestions from the list of events happening at HBS in April.  Cause there’s more coming up here than just Deb’s tulips!

We have our first ever Aura Photographer Weekend at HBS!  Charles Drummond, from Sedona, AZ, will be taking aura photos Sat & Sun, April 16 &17.  ($35 per photo/ indiv or couple).  Walk-ins are welcome, but if you have limited time to hang around, you’ll want to call ahead and reserve a spot.  That’s a busy weekend all round, because we also have Tarot Reading by Grant McPeetie from 12-2 and Jewelry-Making (bracelets & bangles!) on that Sat (2:30-5:30), then on Sun is another  Essential Oils Workshop with Connie Jacoby of Wise Women Botanicals (1-3).

And every Saturday morning at 10:30 we have an open “Coffee & Conversation” gathering.  We provide the coffee (and herbal tea if that’s your preference), the topic, and a discussion facilitator and you all provide the conversation!  Still to come this month, we have Relationships, led by Raven Bren, on Sat April 9 (and who doesn’t have lessons learned in THAT topic?!?); The Divine Feminine, led by Nancy Tanner-Thies on the 16th, and The Energy of Words, led by Rachel Sparks on the 23rd.  We close the month out on April 30 with The Art of Ascension facilitated by folks from Ishaya Worldwide.  No charge to attend any or all — though if you want to throw a little in the Love Offering bowl to help cover the cost of the treats, it’s always appreciated.

New workshops this month include Manifesting Desires on Sat, the 9th (1-3; $10) w/ Raven Bren — which will involve both figuring out WHAT you desire (no small task that), and then the ‘how-you-get-there’ piece; followed by two Saturdays focused on the  Top 12 Messages from Your Bodyw/ Cherie Doyen (4/23 & 4/30, 10:30-6:30 each day).  You can attend either day as a solo event for $39 or catch both for a package deal of $69.    And we have the start of a new monthly series on The Divine Femininefacilitated by Nancy Tanner-Thies & Cat Kelly that kicks off on Wed, 4/27 (6:30-8).  This series will discuss the many stages of womanhood that fall within the broader Maiden, Mother, Matriarch, & Crone labels — from Daughter to Amazon, Priestess to Dark Mother — and explore working with goddesses that embody the associated energies and life lessons of those stages.  $15 per class or $100 for the entire series which runs thru October and concludes with a day-long Goddess Retreat at the Sapattu Retreat outside of Jefferson City.  And we close out the month on April 30 with a workshop on Making Fairy Gardens (1-3) w/Deb Carney & Paula Curry.

In the ‘workshops-back-by-popular-demand” category, we have two repeat special events this month:   Intro to EFT by Kelly Howe, teaching the powerful Emotional Freedom Technique of Tapping (Sun, 4/24 2-4 pm at just $20) and Wand Work w/ Jeff Scott (4/26 6:30-7:30, $10). For practitioners of many earth-based spiritual traditions that utilize wands in intention-setting, healing, protection, and ritual work, this is a great opportunity to learn about the gathering, creation, and uses of wands from many natural woods.

And some regular awesomeness you can catch includes:  Women’s New Moon Drumming Circle (Fri 4/8 6:30-8), Exploring the Tao Discussion Group (Sun 4/10 & 4/24, 2-4), Hearthfires Pagan Meet-up (Tues 4/12 6:30-8), the Ayilla Link-up (Wed 4/13, 6:30-8), Yoga Nidra (Thurs 4/14), Open Reiki Share for Reiki practitioners (Wed 4/20 6:30-8).  And yes, the ongoing book clubs will meet this month as well:  Goddesses Never Age (4/14 & 4/28, 1:30-3) and Fire-Starter Sessions (4/7 & 4/21, 1:30 -3); and the Spirit-Seekers Discussion Group will hold the last meeting of this series on 4/10 (4:30-6), not to mention the fab ongoing Tai Chi classes you can catch every Tues & Wed (5 pm) & Thurs (10:30 am).

Last, but certainly not least, if you’re interested in a reading for some extra guidance this month, we’ve got you covered:

Tarot Readings w/ Rexanna Ipock-Brown, Sat 4/9 (10-2) & Tues 4/19 (4-8)
Tarot Readings w/ Grant McPeetie, Sun 4/10 (1-6), Sat 4/16 (12-2) & Sun 4/24 (4-6)
Psychic Readings or Past-Life Regressions w/ Paula Curry, Wed 4/20 (4-8)

(Be sure to call for an appointment though — these guys fill up fast!)

So that’s it.  No more “there’s nothing to do” whiny days!  (Yeah, sorry about that. Or not.)

Celebrations! Or … not …

February is a month of celebrations:  First comes Mardi Gras (and be sure to drop by the shop to participate in the fun stuff we have planned Sat, 2/6 in honor of the occasion!) and then comes Valentine’s Day.  We actually have two Valentine’s Day displays:  the more traditional romantic one — filled with lovely Rose Quartz, Emerald, & Aventurine, candles charged for Attraction / Love / Soul Mate, astrology books for lovers and those seeking to learn what lessons the planet of love holds for them given her placement in their own astrological chart.  Books on Energies of Love and the Science of Attraction.  All fun stuff.  (And yes, we have lots of great gift possibilities for the special someone in your life!)

And then we have the ‘anti-Valentine’s Day’ table.  Smaller. Off to the side.  Standing a little more by itself.  Kind of like many of us when it comes to Valentine’s Day — or even big crowd celebrations in general.  This one calls it like it is with books like “I’ve Seen Your Future and He’s Not In it” and “Emotional Bullshit.”  Slightly kinder but equally realistic books on healing broken hearts, moving on after divorce and coming to terms with the fact that co-dependence and love aren’t the same thing. This table holds candles that go “Poof!” or threaten to send out the Flying Monkeys  — or at least offer a lovely flame to that wishful thinking.

The thing is … life is both of these displays.  For all of us.  Nobody escapes a broken heart.  We will all cry and we will all laugh.  We will all love and we will all mourn.  The wheel turns.  For those of you in a place to dance in the streets this Mardi Gras, may the joy of celebration fill your soul.  For those of you filled with the love of and for that someone special this Valentine’s Day, savor it to its fullest.  And for those not in a place of celebration this year, who find themselves drawn to that Anti-Valentine’s Day table, consider taking a page from that fabulously wise poet, Mr. David Whyte:

“When your eyes are tired the world is tired also. When your vision has gone no part of the world can find you. Time to go into the dark where the night has eyes to recognize its own. There you can be sure you are not beyond love. . . . Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet confinement of your aloneness to learn anything or anyone that does not bring you alive is too small for you. ”

David Whyte

Blessings on all your heads.
