“Throwing the bones” is an old form of divination with a number of approaches and techniques. Two different workers with two different ways taught Mama Starr, one with a set of possum bones and the other with coon bones; she has both.

Mama Starr warns that she is very very blunt and to the point, but she is also known for being a very compassionate and caring worker. In short, she says, “I report exactly what I see!”

ABOUT MAMA STARR CASAS

Mama Starr is a Southern Culture conjure woman who was raised in the Southern culture of the Deep South Starr holds onto the values of her ancestors. She is a traditional Conjure woman of FOUR living generations of workers, of whom two of the generations have passed on. For over forty years, this veteran Rootworker has been helping folks through her ancestral heritage of Old Style Conjure works informed by the traditions South of the Mason-Dixon line.

Mama Starr is the best-selling author of The Conjure Workbook, volume 1: Working the Root, published through Pendraig Publishing and of Old Style Conjure published through Red Wheel Weiser. She has also authored many bestselling self-published titles on Old Style Conjure such as Working with Blackhawk & the Hoodoo Money Conjure Workbook. Mama Starr is the force behind the Old Style Conjure Shop and the Founder of the Conjure Academy; and beyond the Academy you can find her offering hands-on teaching to folks.

Over the years Mama Starr’s clients have come to her for many different types of Rootwork, including removing crossed conditions, setting conjure vigils, spiritual foot washing, Jinx removing, money work, and honey jars. Her thirty years of Conjure Work has included some of her favorites: making her conjure oils, removing jinxed and crossed conditions, setting conjure vigil candles, and teaching.

Some workers pick a title for themselves. Some of the titles used in conjure work are, Conjure Doctor, Root Doctor, Rootworker, Professor, Conjurer or just plain Hoodoo. In days gone by most of the workers were either called a Root Doctor, Conjure Doctor, or a Conjurer. Mama Starr herself is known as an old style Rootworker and Conjure Doctor and she tries to live in a way she can honor her ancestors and the clients that come to her for help. Years ago she decided not to add a title to her name, but her clients gave her the name Mama Starr and she recognizes what an honor and show of respect that is.
